Abstract

‘Bait’ is an important genre of classical poetry in the Sindhi language. This genre has taken its present form from the Hindi poetry genre ‘Doha’, The meaning of Doha, is two ends. Historically, this genre began during the Soomra period (1050-1350) when folk tales and stories were sung in the form of ‘Gaah’ in gatherings. Sindhi bait is a combination of Doha and Sortha.

          Sindhi poetry has evolved from the Saman period to the Kalhora period and reached its peak during the Kalhora period. During this period, world-class poets like Shah Latif introduced new themes and motifs in Sindhi poetry, which brought about a new kind of revolution in Sindhi poetry. All subsequent poets took influence from Shah Latif and composed poems following his example. This article also attempts to provide a similar evolutionary review in which a brief history of Sindhi poetry from the evolution of Sindhi poetry to the Kalhora period is presented.
