Abstract

This study examines how social media contributes to political polarization through the formation of “echo chambers,” where selective exposure limits individuals’ engagement with opposing viewpoints. Social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow users to curate their information environments and interactions, potentially reinforcing existing beliefs and promoting ideological extremity. Addressing ongoing debates in the literature, this research investigates whether exposure to reinforcement messages within such environments intensifies political polarization.Using a survey-based experimental design focused on the #MeToo movement, participants were randomly assigned to treatment and placebo groups. The treatment group received belief-congruent messages, while the placebo group was exposed to unrelated content. Pre- and post-surveys measured changes in attitudes. Employing Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and a difference-in-difference approach, the findings reveal statistically significant effects, showing that reinforcement messages strengthen prior beliefs and push individuals toward more extreme positions. The study contributes to understanding the causal role of social media in shaping political attitudes in Pakistan and highlights implications for future research on digital communication and polarization.
