The Process Of Democratization And Role Of Opposition Parties In The Formative Years Of Pakistan: A Historical Analysis

Abstract

This research paper provides a historical analysis of the role played by opposition parties both within and outside the parliament concerning political stability in the Pakistan. Pakistan’s political history is marked by a lack of significant instances of unified efforts towards establishing democracy, often leading to discord and disrupting processes, ultimately, resulting in military dictatorships. Within the parliament, the opposition has frequently failed to consistently fulfill its expected role, often obstructing reformative legislative initiatives proposed by the government. Conversely, the government has frequently neglected to provide adequate space for the opposition to engage in constructive criticism. This ongoing lack of coordination between these two vital parliamentary components have resulted in political instability in the country. The research paper provides a contextual background for the study, supporting the argument that the disproportionate influence of the opposition in Pakistani politics has contributed to instability. It contends that without the constructive engagement of the opposition, democracy cannot flourish in Pakistan.
