Students’ Awareness and Practices of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in Urban Waste Management: An Educational and Societal Perspective

Abstract

Education plays a vital role in shaping attitudes, values, and behaviors related to environmental sustainability. Teachers can demonstrate sustainable practices such as waste segregation, reuse of teaching materials, and reduced use of paper and plastic within school environments. Sustainable waste management through the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—provides a viable framework for minimizing waste generation, conserving resources, and reducing environmental degradation. The main objective of the study was to identify the gap between students’ awareness and actual practice of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) among urban households, with particular focus on waste reduction, reuse behavior, and recycling participation. This study employed a quantitative research approach using a descriptive cross-sectional research design to analyze sustainable waste management practices. The study was conducted in selected schools, urban metropolitan cities, characterized by high population density, diverse socio-economic conditions, and significant waste generation. A total of 400 respondents were selected as the sample for this study. The sample size was determined based on recommendations in social science research, which suggest that larger samples increase statistical reliability and reduce sampling error. The study utilized a stratified random sampling technique. This technique ensured balanced representation of different socio-economic groups and enhanced the accuracy and validity of the findings by minimizing selection bias. Primary data were collected through face-to-face surveys and online questionnaires to increase response rates and accessibility. Data were coded and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, including frequency distribution, percentage analysis, and tabular representation. Data collected from multiple stakeholders reveal gaps in awareness, infrastructure, and policy implementation. Recommendations emphasize the importance of community participation, policy enforcement, technological integration, and education in achieving long-term sustainability.
