Architecture Transformation Of Slums: A Case Study Of Slum Bela Korona Nowshera Region In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Abstract

Introduction: This study examined the resilient revitalization of an urban slum known as Bela Koroona in Pir Piai, Nowshera Pakistan. There are more than 350 houses in the whole community and they have severe infrastructural deficits, cramped up rooms, bad lighting and housing facilities, and cases of flooding most especially due to the 2010 floods. Research Methodology: Mixed method approach was used. Both structured interviews with community residents and objective quantitative assessments of the area infrastructure potential were conducted. To fill this knowledge gap, data was collected to determine essential needs and issues to evaluate the applicability of sustainable options. Data Analysis: The study also identified community problems that were necessary for understanding the situation, and these were housing; sanitation; and environmental risks that the community faced. These conditions were considerably aggravated by the 2010 floods, requiring basic fundamental services that are resilient to floods. Conclusions: It was concluded that  sustainable redevelopment will play major role in enhancing welfare of Bela Koroona. The redevelopment proposal includes designs of green, architectural structures, flood-proof structures as well as providing adequate sanitation to the community. Recommendations: It is suggested that funding for development of community must be used and skill centre as the way towards interaction and stimulation of economic activity be the center of it. The stakeholders should consider climate sensitive planning and move towards the objective of making the community more self-sufficient so as to develop sustainable strategies for redeveloping the urban community.
