Grammatical Errors In English Language Writings Of Secondary LevelStudents: An Analysis

Abstract

Grammar is the primary structure of a language. It is a struggle and bicker for indigenous speakers
to comprehend the basic rules and structures of foreign language. Grammatical errors are one of the problems
faced by students in writing. The aim of this study is to analyze the grammatical errors made by the students in
essay writing at secondary level. It is a comparative analysis of grammatical errors, with mixed method approach
of qualitative and quantitative research. For the recent study two test were conducted a pretest and a post test.
About 60 students appeared in the tests. Two descriptive paragraphs were given to the students. The errors were
identified in texts that were produced by the students.Pit Corder identified a model for errors analysis that model
was applied. The most common and salient grammatical errors which were found in the students essays included
spelling errors, capitalization errors, preposition, articles, verb-tense and form, subject verb-agreement, syntax,
passive-voice, modal verb, regular and irregular verb, etc. These errors were classified and tabulated according
to their number of frequencies in the students’ essays. The data shows that students commit different types of
grammatical errors, and most of these errors were produced in the first descriptive paragraph. The findings and
the results of this study showed that the writing skill of the secondary level students needs more reinforcement
and development. The incomprehensibility of grammar rules is the major cause of errors.
