The Dark Side of Social Media and Impact of Fake News on Pakistani Society
Main Article Content
Abstract
Through expert interviews, this study looked at how fake news affects society in the context of Pakistani society's usage of social media. Thematic analysis is used to examine the qualitative data and identify recurring themes. The way the conclusion was phrased made clear how fake news on social media has undermined democracy, increased animosity, and encouraged mistrust. People identify with organizations that reflect their beliefs and values, according to the cultivation theory—all of which are incorporated into the current study. Therefore, the following were the topics that the research's study questions were meant to investigate: the way that misinformation is disseminated through social media and how it contributes to societal divide and mistrust. The study also assumed that social media bogus news will weaken democratic institutions and social self-esters. The study demonstrates how simple it is to exploit social media platforms to spread false information to the broader public. This study also found that bias and the way people interpret the information they desire truly make them more likely to believe fake news. Therefore, given how destructively false information flows on social media, it is reasonable to argue that more effective countermeasures are needed. Promoting the use of inquiry and verification activities and developing media literacy campaigns to warn people about dangers like fake news are two strategies that help people use social networks as safe communication platforms.
