Abstract
Introduction: An essential component in shaping societies, housing has an effect on social cohesiveness, economic stability, and personal well-being, among other areas of existence today. In the context of architectural design, the villa architecture has distinguished itself which delivers functionality and aesthetic at a higher level. Kuwait’s Mishrif region faces extreme climatic conditions while climatic change is impacting the region significantly towards change in weather and climate patterns. Objective: With high end HVAC dependence, rise in costing of energy and non-prioritization of sustainable practices have resulted in environmental degradation of the region. Hence innovative design interventions and public prioritization were needed to enhance sustainability by mitigating environmental impact, improving energy efficiency, and promoting occupant well-being. Methodology: Respondents data was collected using developed questionnaire for sensitization and awareness. Results: It was concluded that the knowledge and the level of awareness amongst the respondents about the sustainable design practices with reference to climate change and allied energy crisis is ample. Though due to lavish life style and ample resources availability, these have not been considered as design priorities. 52% of the respondents pointed out that green design aspects are ‘not used’ in their homes, 25% of the respondents said these are ‘partially used’ and 7% said they are ‘fully used. Recommendations: Allied aspects were also highlighted. Future recommendations with respect to interventions were also proposed.
